Research Seminar and Program Info Session in Shanghai (in-person)

hkust dbaxNYU Shanghai event Apr 18

HKUST DBA and HKUST-NYU Stern MSGF programs are cohosting a seminar and program info session in Shanghai.

Networks, Images, and Lead-Lag Return Predictions

In this event, Prof. Jialin Yu from Department of Finance will present findings from his recent finance research demonstrating that stock networks exhibit predictive lead-lag relationships in returns—indicators strong enough to generate returns that beyond what conventional investment strategies capture.

Traditional investors typically focus on either individual companies or broad market factors like value and size. However, our study reveals a powerful middle layer: the network of connections between stocks. By employing an innovative data-driven approach, we treat the stock connection network as a visual image and analyze it using cutting-edge computer vision techniques. This methodology unveils patterns that elude explanation by standard factors such as market trends, value propositions, profitability metrics, and even momentum indicators. Furthermore, we demonstrate that what was previously attributed to "factor momentum" actually stems from these stock-to-stock lead-lag effects. Notably, the most critical connections evolve over time rather than being static within conventional categories like industry or geography.

This talk will be of particular interest to senior executives, investment professionals, and policymakers seeking a rigorous yet practical framework for navigating increasingly interconnected financial markets.

Program leaders from HKUST DBA and HKUST-NYU Stern MSGF programs will also share valuable insights about the programs.
